What Is Perfect Binding?

Perfect binding is one of the most commonly used methods of binding for a thicker book in commercial printing. It’s the process of using a strong, flexible adhesive to glue the pages into a square spine. This is often used for company profiles, yearbooks, memory books and more!

It’s a great alternative for when your book is a little too thick and perfect for when you’re looking for something that offers a professional, polished look at a relatively low cost. It makes it ideal for high-volume production.

What Is PUR Binding?

PUR binding is a type of perfect binding that uses polyurethane reactive (PUR) glue instead of standard hot-melt (EVA) glue. PUR glue forms a stronger, more flexible bond once it cures, so the book can open wider without cracking the spine and pages are much less likely to come loose.

PUR binding generally suits:

• Books that get heavy use, such as yearbooks, manuals, course guides and catalogues
• Coated or heavier paper stocks, where standard glue can struggle to grip
• Books that need to open flatter for reading or reference
• Items exposed to heat or cold, such as documents kept in cars or warehouses

Artwork Setup

To be able to use perfect binding as your method, you’ll need a minimum of 2mm thickness for the internal text stock.

You’ll then need the spine measurement but don’t worry! This will be easier to find once you’ve got the total amount of pages, your desired paper stock and any finishes like laminating.
